How Emily Downes is helping Children in Need
By line = This week we interviewed Emily Downes the new, up and coming pop star this year. In just one year she has released her debut album and sold 3 million copies in just the first month. We caught up with her to find out what she’s been doing for Pudsey this past month.
Emily Downes is the new Katy Perry. She has been rising t-o the top of our charts all of this year even reaching number one twice with her songs ‘Flame’ and ‘Party’. We have heard plans for a new album and maybe even a tour in the next year! Recently she has invested her time in fundraising for the charity Children in Need. Lets find out more!
What have you been doing this month for Children in Need?
Where do I start?! I’ve been super busy these past few weeks, I’ve been all over the country in all the big cities. I’ve been doing signings and a few gigs all over the place, and all the money we have made has gone to charity. We have raised over £1 million so far! We are only half way in!
There have been rumours that you are doing a celebrity special for Children in Need. Is this true?
Yes! But I can’t tell you too much, all I can say is that I’m doing some cooking. It was great fun and I really hope everyone will really enjoy watching it and supporting the cause.
Are you involved in the Children in Need show?
Actually I am. I’m really looking forward to the experience; I’ve never been on live TV before. I’m going to be presenting for an hour at the end of the show, but before that I’m releasing a surprise. I’m going to debut my newest song live on the show and all the proceeds will be put into the charity! It’s a huge honour to have my name next to the official Children in Need song this year.
Why is Children in Need so important to you?
I have always thought that Children in Need are a great charity for kids everywhere. When I was younger some of my friends were supported by the charity and it really helped them through some really tough times. I want to keep the support coming for anyone else in that situation.
Away from charity now, let’s talk about how you came to be this huge star.
Yeah, well im so lucky to be where I am now. I’m sure most people know that i started off on youtube. I just spent my free time making covers and few orignal songs. Then all of a sudden by channel just started getting huge! An agency picked me up and here I am today!
You just realesed your new album. Tell us more about your styles and influences.
I love the big pop icons like Katy Perry, Jessie J and Arianna Grande. Some of their styles cane be seen in some of my songs but I wanted to make sure that my music is my own.
Some of my song ideas come from books or dreams I’ve had in the past that I felt I could easily write about. A few of my somes including ‘Hurt’ have been written from my past experiences from relationships to family and friends. Those ones are my favourite because they are so personal.
You had a few collabortations on the album. Thats amazing as it’s just your first!
Yeah! It was super cool to be able to have some duets on my debut album. I got approached by Calvin Harris himself to make a song together for my album which was awesome. He said that he loved my voice and wanted to work together in the future which I’d love to do!
I also got to work with Olly Murs. He was so funny and friendly. We’ve made great friends and I’m really happy with the song!
Finally, what can we expect from you in the next year?
Well I’m not too sure about dates and locations but I’m in the process of organsing a tour. I realy want to tour all of Europe and America, but I think I’ll be starting a bit smaller first. I’m planning on it being as friendly and personal as possible.
I’m also in the process of writing a new album that I’m going to start recording in December. I just have so many ideas so expect loads from me in the net few years!

Image Manipulation - Contents Page Image 3
When I manipulated this image i used the spot healing tool to remove blemishes and then used the layer masks and filters to airbrush the skin.

Image Manipulation - Contents Page Image 1
I cropped this image so that it was a smaller file, I then cut out the background using the magnetic lasso tool and refine edge to keep the image looking smooth. I then used the layer masks and filters to airbrush the skin. Finally I adjusted the brightness and contrast to make the image a bit brighter.

Image Manipulation - Double Page Spread Image 1
For this image I first removed the background so that this image also has a transparent background. I used the magic wand tool and the refine edge tool to give a smooth edge and keep the smaller bits of hair. I proceeded to use the same effects as the cover image to smooth the skin and make the colour of the image brighter along with the eyes.
Image Manipulation - Front Cover
To manipulate this image for the front cover I started with removing the background so that it has a transparent back. I used the 'Spot healing brush' to removed spots and blemishes on the skin. I then used layer masks and filters (blur and high pass) to airbrush the skin to make it smooth like it would be in the pop genre of magazines. I then whitened the teeth using a layer mask and adjusting the yellow hue. Finally I changed the brightness/contrast of the image to give more colour to the subject and to make the hair shine better, I put more effect on the glasses and eyes to make them stand out more.
